SINGLE REVIEW: WE’RE NO HEROES – VOODOO

WNH

As a music blogger, I get a lot of Twitter notifications from bands plugging their latest creation, be it a single, album or video. I’ll admit that I’ve not heard of some of them, but there are ones I have and today two rather lovely things happened to put a sunny smile on my face; a follow from Cardiff’s certifiably brilliant We’re No Heroes and notification of their brand new track, Voodoo.

And with just one listen, it’s a track needed by us all. As we prepare for hibernation overload in the final chilly quarter of 2015, Voodoo is a reminder that you don’t need the actual 8 seconds-in-length summer we endure in good old Blighty to enjoy the track.

I say enjoy; I mean love.

The ‘L’ word is a big one, right? But it’s spot on for this tune. Sunny, upbeat and intelligent in its arrangement, it’s one of the catchiest tracks you’ll hear this side of New Year. With honest-to-goodness lyrics like ‘Is it safe to be inside your head?’ and ‘Will we come out alive?’ sitting on top of a beautiful bed of jangly guitars and simple drum beats, it’s a sure fire winner within its opening five seconds.

There’s no denying that Voodoo has a touch of Foals about it, but it’s not that We’re No Heroes are taking their creative direction from Yannis et al. They’re the genuine article and a hotbed of individual talents all packaged up into a perfectly formed band. And Voodoo is living, breathing proof of that. Give it a listen and see what you think, but be warned; you’ll be as obsessed with it as you are possessed.
